Visit the Sambenitos Collection of the Tui Cathedral

The heritage linked to the Jewish and crypto-Jewish presence in Tui has in the Cathedral's collection of "Sambenitos" one of its unparalleled references, as this collection is unique in Europe.

These are five linen canvases that contain fourteen sambenitos that collect the sentences made by the Court of the Inquisition in various processes carried out in the city at the beginning of the 17th century for accusations of "Judaizing practices" against various New Christians. Especially from the Coronel, Saravia and Méndez families. These canvases were hung on the walls of the churches of origin of the condemned, in this case the Tui Cathedral, as permanent testimony of the sentence. From there derives the expression in spanish “colgarle un sambenito” that is still present.
