Sephardic Route of Galicia y León

Discover and explore the Sephardic roots in Sefarad

In addition to its natural beauty and its rich historical legacy, it treasures an important heritage linked to the presence in the city of the Jewish and Judeoconversal community. Recent research has revealed that the original nucleus of one of the Jewish quarters was in the vicinity of the synagogue, on Oliveira Street - now Las Monjas Street. Later it would be located on the nearby Canicouba street, which is the current Bishop Castañón. These two streets mainly maintain the medieval layout and charm intact.

You will be able to see the only preserved "sambenitos" of the Inquisition in Spain.

Ribadavia emerged as a relevant population center in the 11th century and was built between 1065 and 1071, with King García I, as the capital of Galicia’s kingdom. The royal settlement in the city and its strategic location of Ribadavia attracted a good number of Hebrews attracted to the claim of magnificent possibilities for their businesses. The importance of Galicia’s kingdom was great at the time, with borders that extended beyond the Duero River, and even with vassal power over the Muslim kingdom of Badajoz. The Old Town of Ribadavia was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1947.
